    Difference between SPDIF and Optical cables/ports?

    Q: I'm looking into upgrading my HDTV in the cheese-paring future and I have my eye on one in particular (the ViewSonic N4790P).

    After some research, I found out this unit does not have an Optical Audio out anchorage, which is a problem because that's how I have my current TV connected to my surround sound system.

    The TV does, however, have an "SPDIF" harbour...but I'm not sure what that is exactly. Will an optical cable work in that port? If not, is there some tidy up of cable I can get that has one end SPDIF and one end Optical so I can hook up the new TV to the surround sound recipient in the same way?

    Also, is one considered "better" than the other? This is one of the only televisions I've seen of this vastness that does not offer an Optical Audio port, and I really shortage to be able to hook my new TV to my receiver. What can I do?
    Thanks to the first response, as long as they're the same obsession, I'll be able to keep everything set up the same way, which is what I want.

    As for why I'm running the optical cable from my TV to my receiver, it's because my recipient isn't high-end and doesn't have an HDMI port. My Tv, however, has 2 HDMI ports. I to the point my PS3 and 360 to my TV via HDMI, and then I run the optical cable to the receiver to get true setting sound because all the signals are digital. My receiver doesn't have enough ports to be a "old-fashioned-though," so I hooked it up a different way. The TV itself separates the 5.1 audio from the consoles and then sends it to the recipient through the optical cable, allowing me to have true surround sound without having to unfashionable through my receiver.
