i know that 1080p is what i should be looking at getting, but i'm not sure on brands. i identify magnavox has been around forever, but what about the other brands? thanks so much!!!

Righteous wondering, but have you checked into the 720p projectors that are available now? You can get a 2500 lumen, 4000 hour tuber toshiba projector from Sam's for 700 bucks.
2500 lumens will be bright enough to ogle in the daytime as long as it's not as sunroom. At night, it's like being at the movies. You can get a respectable 120" screen (that's TEN FEET :) ) for 120 bucks.
For the tell of, for the first couple of years, I used a white wall. No special paravent or anything. If it weren't for worrying about sucking bugs into the fan, I'd take it outside on a summer tenebrosity and have the friends over for a sit-in movie against the side of the house.
FYI, I'm typing this as I stare at the wall. I channel everything through my computer to my reciever, and that goes to my projector. I can watch movies or tv while surfing the internet in a multifarious window. I watch cable tv on it as well. I can use the pc for a DVR and save favorite shows or missed shows on the unsparing drive. You can get a computer that will do the job now for 500 bucks. If you shop on the internet, you can get a yamaha video reciever for less than 400. (sign in B&H Photo - google shop the item, then watch for the vendors).
The superb thing is - if you take a set of decent powered pc speakers, a portable dvd player, and a projector, you can fit it all into a slight box, carry it yourself, and have a 10 foot diagonal picture that makes it seem like you are at the pictures, anytime, anywhere.
It's not perfect for everyone - my sister's house doesn't have 10 feet of non-stop flat wall in a spot conducive for movie watching anywhere in her living apartment. You need about 12 feet of length in front of the projector for most models to get a large-hearted image. (there's a panasonic that will throw a huge image up close).
Anyway, I cognizant of this isn't what you asked, but I enjoy my projector so much I just have to chime in anytime someone talks about tv's. The quotation is very similar to the tv's you are looking at, and the tv's have bulbs that go bad eventually as well.
