Is the PS3 defective?
A: As the other answers have said HDMI is your defeat bet.
Because a lot of people confuse component and composite cables, I'll put it like this: if you're using the red/creamy/yellow cables that came with the PS3, those are composite (not component) and only do standard def. To get HD, you privation the red/green/blue cables.
If you are using the red/green/blue cables, then it *should* be working. Try resetting the video on the PS3 by turning it off, then holding the power handle for 5-10 seconds. It should beep once to turn on, and then a second time when it will reset the video to defaults and then reboot.

PS3 = Biggest piece of also-ran for $300?
My 360 works with component cables and looks way better than PS3 I might add.
A: I find it merry that you claim the 360 video looks better in Components when you can't even inspection the PS3 video in Components. Maybe you should actually get the video working first before making a seek on what looks better on your TV.
Are you sure there is nothing you need to do on the TV itself (like selecting an HD Fashion or something or checking the picture in picture feature if equipped)?
